• Design and development of an integrated control system for environmental optimization.

    The integrated control system for environmental optimization was designed to control the weather in the vineyards; thanks to this it will be possible to know when fungi attacks are most likely to occur. This system is based in a net of weather sensors placed in the vineyards; they record the levels of temperature and humidity in the area all along the year. This information is sent, through wifi technology, to a computer, where it is processed. At that point the dangerous level of temperature and humidity is automatically selected, as well as the weather forecast, and the system reports to the winegrowers on the probabilities of a fungus attack in the vineyards. As a consequence, the use of chemical products is optimized, because they are only used to treat the vineyards when it is strictly necessary.

  • Treatment efficiency improvement in the vineyards

    Once samples are taken in the vineyards and information about the products and treatments used by winegrowers are collected in the area of work, the development conditions of the most common fungus (temperature, humidity and development of the vineyards) will be studied in the labs, as well as the most convenient products and treatments to avoid diseases in the vineyards of the Designation of Origin Rías Baixas. Thanks to the labs of the Diputación de Pontevedra, located in Lourizán, and the team of biologists specialized in wine growing, it will be possible to research and test the experimental treatments before they are recommended to the winegrowers; our aim is to obtain more efficient treatments in the vineyards.

  • Development and implementation of sustainable cultivation methods

    Once the integrated control system and the methods to improve treatment efficiency have been proved, we will implement the most suitable methods to reduce the need of chemical products. The aim is to reduce the use of chemical nitrogen in the fertilization; instead this can be obtained thanks to sustainable agricultural practices, such as natural production of humus (decomposing remains of plants) in autumn or even the possibility of using leguminous plants to provide nitrogen and avoid the spread of plagues. The implementation will be carried out in the vineyards where the actions of the project will be developed, for example in the vineyards of Martin Códax, Condes de Albarei and Rosalía de Castro.

  • Development of an Environmental Management Plant

    The Environmental Management Plant of the project Life + Atlantic Vineyards is based in the design and development of an specific management plan and actions including experiences, lessons and techniques applied during the project in order to obtain a sustainable development in the vineyards of the Designation of Origin Rías Baixas. This plan will remain through time; it will reduce the risk of pollution produced by chemical products and it will let a sustainable use of natural resources with gains for the wine producers of the region.

  • Monitoring and self-assessment of the project Atlantic Vineyards

    Life+ Atlantic Vineyards will assess the effectiveness of the actions through three reports: one at the beginning in order to check the conditions before starting the project; a second one at the end of the first year, when the integrated control system is installed; and a third report at the end of the second year, when the improvements in the treatments and the sustainable agriculture actions are carried out.
